BUILDING DEVELOPMENT / ELECTRICAL PERMITS

Before developing or starting any type of construction, moving a manufactured home on your property, or adding on, you need to obtain a Building Development/Electrical Permit from the Acadia Parish Police Jury Permit Office.  This page explains what you need to do to obtain these parish permits.  If you should have any questions not mentioned in on this page, please do not hesitate to call the Permit Office at 337-788-4999.

If your property is located inside municipal limits, contact that municipality for their permit procedure.

The following questions and answers will hopefully help you better understand Acadia Parish's permit procedure.

Who needs a permit?

Anyone outside the municipal limits of Acadia Parish who is planning any type of construction, moving a manufactured home or any other structure on their property, or anyone adding needs to obtain a Building Development/Electrical Permit.

Is there a fee for the permit?

Yes, there are fees for the permits.  For information concerning the permit fees, see the fee schedule below.

Click here for Fee Schedules.  (You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view this page.)

Where do I get the permit?

Permits are obtained at the Acadia Parish Health Unit located at 530 West Mill Street in Crowley.

What do I need to do to obtain my permit?

You need to call the Building Permit Office as soon as you decide to develop your property.  Have the legal description of your property at hand when you call so the staff can check on the flood zone.  Portions of the parish are located in flood hazard areas; therefore, some structures must need elevation requirements.  The following information is needed to complete a permit application.

  1. A complete copy of recorded legal property description (i.e. Cash Sale, Act of Donation) of the property.
  2. A copy of a certified plat of the property.
  3. A 911 address of the property.  The address can be obtained from the parish 911 office.  Phone: 337-788-8770 -  Mary Richard.
  4. Contractors bid, bill of sale, house plans, or purchase agreement.
  5. Check or money order.
  6. Elevation surveys, if applicable
    1. elevation of ground survey submitted with application.
    2. elevation of floor survey to be submitted when structure is moved on or floor constructed.
  7. State Fire Marshal approval for all non-residential development.

FLOODPLAIN MANAGEMENT

What is floodplain management?

Several years ago the Parish adopted floodplain management regulations to reduce future flood damages.  Since the Parish became a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program, citizens have the availability to purchase flood insurance and receive federal funds when a disaster strikes (hurricane, flooding, tornado).  In return, the Parish must regulate development within the Parish when property is located in a flood hazard zone.
